Today is Perfect Picture Book Friday. I haven’t been blogging recently because of our up-coming move…but I just had to share this very special book with all of you.
With the start of the new school year, many parents and children will be coping with a problem that has been around for a long time – bullying. I’m joining a special blog book tour to raise awareness of this wonderful addition to every parent’s and teacher’s picture book shelf:
CHICK – O – SAURAS REX
Chick-O-Saurus Rex
Written by Lenore Jennewein
Illustrated by Daniel Jennewein
Publisher: Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers (July 2013)
Opening lines: “Every little animal at the farm longed to play in the tree house. Especially Little Chick.”
Age: 3 and up (the publisher website says 4 and up, but I read the book to an almost 3 year old this week and he LOVED it!)
Themes: Bullying, believe in yourself, helping others, courage
Synopsis:
Little Chick wants to play in the tree house. Donkey, Pig and Sheep don’t think Little Chick is brave enough or mighty enough. Will Little Chick prove worthy and be allowed in the tree house? Grab a copy and find out: Available on Amazon!
Why I like this book
- Great read-aloud
- Bold illustrations
- Wonderful message about bullying – super story for preschool or kindergarten
How parents can use this book:
- Wonderful read-aloud…please, please, please read to your child EVERY DAY
- Good springboard for a discussion on bullying and getting along with others
- Highlights how even the smallest of us is worthwhile and useful
You can visit the other blogs on the tour here.
You can contact the husband and wife author/illustrator team here and here.
Related Activities:
To extend the enjoyment and learning of every story time, I love to use a craft activity. Here’s a fun project using a paper plate or card stock.
PAPER PLATE CHICKEN MASK

As many of you know, we are moving to New Hampshire at the end of September. We’ve arranged for the movers and already have our plane tickets to New Hampshire…with a 2-day stop in Chicago so we can visit with our new grand-daughter. Less than 6 weeks to go…and I am filling up boxes fast!
I’ve decided to lighten our moving load a little and offer the print copies of my Show Me How book at a substantial discount on Amazon. For the next TWO WEEKS ONLY, brand-new copies will be $14.99. There are still 6 weeks left to summer…help your preschooler get ready for school…and when the school year starts, many little ones will be looking for fun activities to do until older brothers and sisters get home. Do you know a day care provider? Expectant mom? Homeschooling family? Grab a couple of copies at this unbelievable price and give them as Christmas presents. On September 8, the price will return to $24.99 (which is still almost 50% less than the retail price). Please spread the word about this great opportunity!

It’s a fairly new book…hopefully your library will get it…if not, maybe you can request that your library purchase it…many libraries take recommendations from patrons.:) Thanks for the packing good wishes…it’s a long process when you have LOTS of STUFF…but it is very freeing to throw away or donate or sell…lots more room to walk around.:)
