Perfect Picture Book Friday: REVOLUTIONARY PRUDENCE WRIGHT: Leading the Minute Women in the Fight for Independence PLUS Giveaway

Happy Perfect Picture Book Friday, dear friends. Here’s a book from one of my favorite picture book authors, Beth Anderson. It’s the untold (until right now) story of a courageous woman (I love stories like that) who made a difference. And thanks to the author and her publisher, you might win a copy of this BRAND NEW (only 11 days old) book. Make sure to leave a comment to be entered.

REVOLUTIONARY PRUDENCE WRIGHT: LEADING THE MINUTE WOMEN IN THE FIGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE

Written by Beth Anderson

Illustrated by Susan Reagan

Published by Calkins Creek/Astra (2022)

Ages:7-10

Themes: Women in History, Courage, American Revolutionary War

Synopsis: From Amazon:
Here is the first-ever picture book about female Revolutionary War activist Prudence Wright, who rallied the first and only group of “minute women” to fight the British, changing history in the process.

Prudence Wright had a spark of independence.

Annoyed when the British king held back freedoms in colonial Massachusetts, feisty and fearless Prudence had enough. She said no! to British goods, determined to rely on her resourcefulness and ingenuity to get by. And when British troops continued to threaten the lives of her family and community, she assembled and led the “minute women” of Pepperell to break free of tradition.

This untold story of a courageous and brave woman from the Revolutionary War continues to inspire today.

And here’s a STARRED review from Kirkus: “Reagan’s accomplished illustrations, executed in watercolor with digital drawing, add historical veracity to Anderson’s superbly documented, at times hair-raising narrative. The author explicitly situates Wright and her female comrades as pioneers who ‘proved themselves as full citizens’ in an era before female enfranchisement. Vivid, absorbing, and inspiring. ” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Why I Love This Book
1. The text: Beth Anderson is a master at connecting us with the main character. Her diligent research always delivers a true story. And her skill at finding the perfect words stirs our hearts and and makes us care for her characters.
2. The illustrations: Susan Reagan’s fabulous watercolors draw us into each scene, helping us feel like we are right there!
3. This is a Mighty Girl story – and I absolutely love those, especially when they give recognition to women who were not acknowledged in their own time.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. I’m pretty sure I will – it’s my birthday today and my daughter and son-in-law have some surprises in store for me, I think. And next week I’ll be sharing some exciting #50PreciousWords information – FABULOUS PRIZES and a wonderful LITERACY INITIATIVE that will put books into the hands of students in need. I’m still looking for author critiques, seats in online picture book writing classes, and anything else that #50PreciousWords winners would love to pick as their prize. Please DM me on Facebook or Twitter or email me: viviankirkfield@gmail.com.

I also wanted to give a HUGE shout-out thank you to everyone who donated on my Facebook Birthday Fundraiser. It benefits the Highlights Foundation scholarship fund that Maria Marshall and Sherri Jones Rivers set up to help me honor the memory of my husband who had supported me on my writing journey and who passed away in 2018. The Stuart Kirkfield Scholarship Fund benefits women writers who are embarking on this new career later in life. Several recipients have already benefited in past years…and the Facebook fundraiser has raised enough to help several more. I’m so grateful and I know that Stuart, a published author himself, is smiling down at the positive response. https://www.facebook.com/donate/670310664098007/

    • Thank you for your insightful words – yes there are so many more! Though there may not be a complete historical record, I think these are important stories to help us realize all the mighty everyday people out there.
