Sunday Post: Mother's Day

Happy Mother’s Day to every woman who has eveR held a baby or read to a child or sat white-knuckled in the passenger seat as her teenage son or daughter took the wheel of the family car for the first time. Happy Mother’s Day to every mom, grandmother, auntie, teacher, daycare provider or counselor who has held a child’s hand and offered love, encouragement, a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen.

Should You Write to Your Kids?

 

My mother was a stay-at-home mom in the 50’s and 60’s..the days of Father-Knows-Best and Leave it to Beaver. She was there when I got up in the morning. She was there when I came home from school. She was there to tuck me into bed at night. She listened patiently as I rattled on about my day. She loved me unconditionally. I doubt that I appreciated it as a child – but by the time I was a parent, I certainly did.

1993…The Year of the Graduations (Junior High, High School and College)

I was a work-at-home mom (WAHM) in the 70’s and 80’s…the days of Happy Days and All in the Family, Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons. I left teaching to raise a family – and when a second income was needed, I operated a daycare so that I could be at home when my kids got up in the morning and came home from school. I loved it – but the times were changing and many women were choosing to work outside the home. I truly believe that each family situation is unique and what a child needs most is not a certain number of hours spent with a parent, but a feeling that he or she is loved and valued, no matter what.

  2. What a wonderful surprise you have given me on Mother’s Day Vivian 🙂 I look forward to reading this book.
    I also chose to be a stay at home mom when my children were younger and have only recently gone back to work. I have no regrets staying at home with them as I could enjoy every little thing about their growth and development.

  6. From your Facebook pictures, it looks like you had a great mother’s day (and grandmother’s day). It’s very hard to balance work and life without “sacrificing” one for the other. I always keep in mind that family comes first because your job can come and go but your family will always be there for you, if you take care of it.

    • Milka…I always love reading your comments…you have a wisdom and maturity that many don’t even attain…and you are so young! I hope you had a beautiful Mother’s Day…and I apologize for not visiting your blog lately…I barely get to read anyone’s…trying to concentrate on writing/revising/submitting…although I must admit, I haven’t submitted near as much as I wanted to or should. I aim to do better in the second half of the year. 😉
