Happy Book Birthday: NATIONAL REGULAR AVERAGE ORDINARY DAY

Some of the books that are launching recently seem so perfect for the current world situation – I wonder if the authors had ESP!  This one, for example!

Let’s sing an extra-ordinary Happy Birthday to Lisa Katzenberger’s latest picture book:

NATIONAL REGULAR AVERAGE ORDINARY DAY

Written by Lisa Katzenberger

Illustrated by Barbara Bakos

Published by Penguin

Synopsis from Amazon:

Even the regular, average, ordinary days can be celebrated with this charming picture book!

Peter does not like being bored, so he comes up with a way to have some festive fun–he’ll celebrate a different holiday each day! He even rates them on a scale of 1 to 10. But when he wakes up one morning to discover there isn’t any holiday, he realizes he’ll have to take matters into his own hands and make up his own! That’s easier said than done, though, and nothing seems to go right–until Peter realizes that even a regular, average, ordinary day can be something worth celebrating.

What I love about this book is that kids can really relate to feeling bored…especially these days!

I’m also excited because I love books written by kidlit friends…and I’ve been lucky enough to meet the lovely Lisa Katzenberger on a couple of my trips to Chicago…earlier this year I even got to have lunch with her!!!!

Order a copy of NATIONAL REGULAR ORDINARY DAY where you’ll find out:

  • Which holiday rated a 1
  • If squirrels like the bathtub
  • What you can do with a cardboard box
  • How often a cat appears in the illustrations even though it wasn’t in the manuscript

And how about a free downloadable activity kit? Here is the link from Lisa website: http://www.lisakatzenberger.com/books.html

I hope you all have a lovely rest of the week. My days are definitely busy…currently reading a pile of manuscripts for Justin Colon’s #PBChat Mentorship Program and also clearing the clutter in preparation of putting my house on the market…and packing boxes. It seems like yesterday that I packed 350 boxes when we moved from Colorado to NH…and now, although it will only be a move of a few miles, you still have to go through everything and pack it up. Plus on Friday, I’ll be joining Callie Metler Smith’s Writing Magic Retreat – with a presentation about Writing Cross Culturally.
Please stay safe, everyone…and be well!

  1. What a wonderful idea for a picture book! Children will certainly relate to the MC’s struggle to find a way to overcome boredom. And there is even a bonus activity kit! How awesome! Thank you for introducing us to this cute book, Vivian. I’ll be thinking of you as you prepare to move. We moved 5 times so I know how overwhelming it can be. May all go smoothly.

  2. This is the perfect time for a book like this! I love the idea of celebrating an ordinary day. Good luck with your move, Vivian. Moving isn’t easy, but it will be worth it once you are in your new home! xo

And, Vivian, since you brought it up–good luck with your move. Now we expect pictures of you leaving your old place and arriving at your new place!

Vivian, good luck on your move. A few miles or a thousand miles…it all requires boxes!

  5. I love the premise of this book! I’m having lots of very ordinary days lately. Perhaps I should either make my own holiday, or celebrate ordinary things? I’ll be putting this book on my TBR pile. Looking forward to learning whether squirrels like the tub!
