#50PreciousWords 2024 International Writing Contest WINNERS AND HONORABLE MENTIONS

WELCOME, DEAR FRIENDS!
Thanks to your enthusiastic participation,
we had a wonderfully successful event!
#9th Annual
#50PreciousWords
#672 Amazing Entries
#2776 Encouraging, Positive and Supportive Comments on the Blog Post
#200+ Books Purchased for the Literacy Initiative
#60 Fabulous Prizes
#8 Exhausted Judges
#1 INCREDIBLE KIDLIT COMMUNITY

The hallmark of this contest is the positivity and enthusiasm it generates. And that’s because of all of YOU! Every year there are thousands of comments on the contest blog post – and all of them are encouraging and supportive and positive – and that’s not something you find in many places these days.

I say this every year and I know it sounds corny – but it’s very true: If you participated and submitted an entry, YOU ARE A WINNER! Because writing, revising and submitting are the steps we all need to take, no matter where we are on the path to publication. Some of the stories felt like books already! And many are books in the making.

If your story won a prize, it means lots of the judges loved it. If your story snagged an Honorable Mention, it means that several judges loved it. And even if you don’t see your name on either of these lists, please know that EVERY story received some judge love. And in my opinion, EVERY STORY had merit. But just like the manuscripts we send to an editor, the editor may fall in love with it but the acquisitions team needs to fall in love with it also. Or she falls in love with it and then another story comes across her desk and she loves that one even more. Please please please promise me that if you love your story, you will keep going with it – get feedback from critique buddies – revise it…and never ever give up!

Please join me in thanking our wonderful hard-working judges. ALL are avid readers, seasoned writers, and dear friends. They put in dozens and dozens and dozens of hours to give each story careful consideration.

This year we continued the literacy initiative in partnership with one of my local independent bookstores, The Bookery in Manchester, NH. I’m thrilled to share that in the next week or so, I’ll be delivering almost 300 brand-new children’s books to two elementary schools and a middle school in need – I also have a box of books for a Montessori Charter school in Manchester…all thanks to you for supporting this – the school librarians are so excited to receive new books for their students!  I also received beautiful signed books from many authors who mailed me copies from their personal stash – you probably saw my social media shout-outs during the past month – and those have already been brought over to the bookstore to add to the #50PreciousWords pile.

The guidelines for the contest were simple – write a story for children in 50 words or less. Of course, writing a complete story in 50 words or less is not simple at all! But many of you did it! And did it magnificently! If you didn’t win a prize or receive an Honorable Mention, please, please, please don’t be discouraged. Many of the stories that didn’t win will probably become books – the ideas were phenomenal! And some of the titles – oh my gosh – they were perfect! Please keep writing! Please continue working on them. As you can well imagine, with 672 entries, my assistant judges and I had to make some difficult cuts.

Here are the Honorable Mentions arranged by category as best as we could determine. These stories were filled with heart or humor or both. We could definitely envision these as books on shelves. Please keep going with them!!! And please grab the Honorable Mention badge created by Judie Offerdahl, just for us!

And now…drum roll please…Here are the 2024 #50PreciousWords prize winners. If you see your name in this list, PLEASE EMAIL ME IMMEDIATELY: viviankirkfield@gmail.com so that I can contact you when it’s your turn to choose a prize. Distributing prizes (especially when there are 60 of them) is like a full-time job. If you are in the top 20, please look over the prize list RIGHT AWAY and think carefully about which prize would benefit you the most so that when I contact you, you’ll already have an idea of what you want. If I reach out to you and you don’t respond within 24 hours, I will have to go on to the next winner and come back to you later.

If you are one of the 60 prize winners, you can snag the Prize Winner badge, also created by Judie Offerdahl.

And for the enjoyment of everyone, I’m pasting in the top 20 stories – some made us laugh, some made us cry, but they all made us sit up and take notice.

Soaring into the number one spot in #50PreciousWords 2024:

PAPER PLANE by Kim Wagner Nolan
Smooth. Crinkle.
Crush.
Flight canceled.

New sheet.
Crease. Crimp.
Crumple.
Departure delayed.

New sheet.
Fold. Flip.
Rip.
Turbulence.

New sheet.
Pleat. Pinch.
Press.
Perfect!

Heart thumping,
hike uphill.
Summit reached,
stand stock-still.

Pilot steady,
deep breath in.
Runway ready,
wait for wind…

Whoosh, release,
TAKEOFF!
Spirits soar
on paper wings.

Stepping up to the podium at number TWO:
DONUT DAY by Lori Clement

Monday, Tuesday- boring
Wednesday, Thursday drag.
Friday, Saturday- just ok.
Sunday’s my favorite. Donuts with Dad.
Behind glass,
Donuts galore:
Sprinkled, frosted,
Filled, and more.
Jelly for dad,
Frosted for me,
We eat and talk
Contentedly.
Time to leave,
He kisses my cheek.
“Love you son,
See you next week.”

Growing glorious images in our minds, our number THREE winner:
THE MEMORY TREE by Charline Barger

Dad planted a memory tree,
So I wouldn’t forget.
“It needs water to grow.”
I watered it with my tears.
“It must be pruned to flourish.”
I broke branches with my anger.
“It needs love to blossom.”
I hugged it with my heart.
I waited…
And memories of Momma bloomed.

Flying in at number FOUR:

FLACO: FEATHERED LIVES COUNT by Rozana Rajkumani

12 years caged.
11 snips in the dark.
10 flaps to freedom.
9 am news.
8 million New Yorkers watch
7 days a week as
6-foot wings soar over
5th Avenue and beyond.
4 seasons of defying odds.
3 cheers everywhere as
2 different worlds meet in
1 beautiful story.

Roaring in at number FIVE with words that sparked change:
FRANCES PERKINS AND THE FIRE THAT CHANGED A COUNTRY by Elizabeth Kalasinsky

March 25, 1911.
Trapped behind locked doors,
146 people died in a NYC factory fire.
Mostly young women.
Immigrants seeking the American dream,
finding a nightmare.

Frances Perkins witnessed the fire.
Saw the burned bodies.
Spent her life
fighting to protect workers.
Created laws
that still save lives today.

Taking off like a rocket in the number SIX spot:
THE FLOATING PHYSICIST by Katherine Rea

Propelled by heat and colorful silk,
He sailed in balloons
Through inky black nights
And sun-soaked days
To discover the source of radiation in our air.

He proved it came from outer space –
This mysterious energy,
Called cosmic rays.

He paved the way
For nuclear physics today:
Victor Franz Hess

This fab entry added up to the number SEVEN spot:
A WINNING EQUATION by Trenise Ferreira

2000 applicants DIVIDED by 15 spots gave Mae Jemison a FRACTION of a chance to join NASA. But she ADDED courage and SUBTRACTED fear, which MULTIPLIED her odds. She knew her ABSOLUTE VALUE in this EQUATION. The SUM? Becoming the first black woman in history to soar among the stars.

They say you can’t see the forest for the trees…but we saw this one deserved spot number EIGHT:
OLD TREE’S TALE by Patti Richards

Old Tree
cracks a knee,
tumbles down,
and breaks her crown.
She heaves, sighs,
then shuts her eyes.
Her roots exposed . . .

Mosses grow.
Mushrooms glow.
Snakes nest.
Butterflies rest.
Fox then
digs a den.
Life begins once again.

And our summer-loving hearts skipped this one to spot number NINE:
SCHOOL’S OUT by Angela Blakey

Don’t look for me
I’ll be slippin’ slidin’
Fish bitin’
Far from school

Can’t catch me
I’ll be skippin’ lickin’
Somersault flippin’
Spinning wheels
In the sun

See, I’m a
Number-crunching
Words flowing
Fan of learning

But now it’s
Kick back
Chit chat
Swing a bat
Hacky sack
Summertime.

While this entry went around the world and landed in spot number TEN:
LOOK – LOOK AGAIN! by Robin Currie

In dry leaves on the forest floor: a violet.
On a prickly milkweed shell: a butterfly.
In the cactus shadow: a chameleon.
In tumbleweed filled scrub: a hummingbird.
On a dead log in the swamp: a dragonfly.
On an arctic ice flow: a puffin.
In the stormy sky: a rainbow.

This entry powered its way to spot number ELEVEN:
A WALL HAS TWO SIDES by Nicole Loos Miller

A wall has two sides
Our side is right
Theirs is wrong

The wall has two sides
And a tiny hole
Where dreams are whispered
And laughter drifts through

Our wall has two sides
But I am starting to wonder…
Maybe there are more
Than two sides
After all.

Persevering to win prize spot number TWELVE:
ART FROM DARKNESS: A TRIBUTE TO L.M. MONTGOMERY by Kamilla Milligan

Strange and quiet child,
abandoned young,
she escapes into imagination—pouring out poems and stories
but piling up “no”s.
Losing her bosom friend.
Exiled from home.
Cheated by publishers.
Family struggling, dysfunctional.
Through it all, she persisted,
building the House of Dreams she never had,
For kindred spirits everywhere.

Compassion triumphs at number THIRTEEN:
UPHEAVAL LIFELINE by Shuba Mohan

Snow crunched under her sandaled feet.
She stood stiffly,
Entering our home with nothing.
Papers exchanged between Mom and the lady.
Then, in silence we got ready for bed.
I offered my 2nd favorite teddy.
With tears in her eyes,
She shook her head.
I gave her my hand instead.

Tugging at our hearts and our sense of humor to take number FOURTEEN:
BESTIE FINDS MS. BELLA by Storktruth

Heart racing,
I search the halls.
Where’s my Bestie?

I trip and stumble.
Legos, books, and pencils flying everywhere.

Ms. Bella takes cover.
“To class now!” she says.
“But … my Bestie’s gone,” I say,
fighting back tears.

Ms. Bella screams.
Bestie nibbles at her feet.

A shining example of how to be an ally at number FIFTEEN:
THE NOTE by Sarah Hansen

You can’t play with us,
reads the note passed from hand to hand to mine.
Another hand grabs the note,
unfolds it,
smooths the crinkles.
Folds it again: Wings!
The plane takes off—and so do we,
hand in hand.

This submission lit up the night at number SIXTEEN:
NATURE’S NIGHTLIGHT by Morgan Lau

Sand castles topple from tides.
Beach tools burst from bags
set for home.
It’s phytoplankton’s turn to surf.
Living lanterns
in every wake.
Magic marvels
in every wave.
Fireflies flicker and dance in the dunes
while sparkles shimmy
between the sky and sea.
After the sun sets,
the
ocean
glows!

With a flutter of feathers, this snagged spot number SEVENTEEN:
OSPREY WINGS by Marlee Fuller-Morris

The sun rises,
Babies beg,
Wings lift off.

Scales shimmer,
Fish surface,
Wings dive…

miss.

Talons empty,
Babies cry,
Wings dry.

Silver glimmers,
Fins glitter,
Wings plummet…

catch!

But eagles chase,
Fish fall,
Wings flee.

Bellies empty,
Babies shriek,
Wings shiver.

Last chance,
Great splash,
Wings fly home…
with breakfast.

This one was a delicious meal for our hearts and souls at number EIGHTEEN:
MARIPOSAS by Patricia Brown

Before school,
Mami puts kisses
and hugs in my pocket.
Besos, abrazos
stay with me as
I begin
to understand
the words,
questions
that swirl around
in my mind.
I catch them,
put them in my backpack.
At home,
They flutter out
like mariposas.
Words, stories,
my gift to Mami.

We wanted to join this delightful tea party at number NINETEEN:
CATERPILLAR TEA (A Look at Larval Plants!) by Lauri C. Meyers:

Caterpillars joined me for afternoon tea.
A menu disaster! (They couldn’t agree.)

Monarch, her majesty, only would munch
Poisonous milkweedy salad for lunch.

Swallowtail surveyed my garden of spices,
Preferring the parsley prepared in small slices.

The Viceroy demanded some cottonwood tree…
Which left all the strawberry cupcakes for me!

And this one had plenty of light to find it’s way to number TWENTY:
DAYLIGHT NIGHTLIGHT by Gigi Le Flufy

First light,
dawn light,
dancing on the floor.

Softlight,
hall light,
underneath the door.

Skylight,
brightlight,
light on baby’s feet.

Uplight,
outlight,
daylight in the street.

Bus light,
truck light,
bike light moving fast.

Longlight,
shortlight,
loud light flashing past.

Homelight,
starlight,
moonlight shining bright.

Nightlight,
goodnight,
baby sleeping tight.

HERE IS THE LIST OF PRIZES – Editors and Agents are mostly in the first group, seats in picture book writing classes in the second group, and author critiques and Zoom Ask-Me-Anything sessions and signed books and some author consultations are in the third. Just because something is Prize 1 or 2 doesn’t mean it’s the best prize…if you are one of the 57 prize winners, the best prize is the prize that is best for you. And honestly, the biggest prize is that you wrote a story and you submitted it – and for that, you deserve much praise!!

The Highlights Foundation offers personal retreat opportunities for our community at our campus in northeastern Pennsylvania, The Barn at Boyds Mills.

I cannot remember a time when I didn’t know how to read (although I know there WAS such a time). I have always lived surrounded by books. Therefore, it’s probably no surprise that I ended up wanting to create my own. This too, I started at a young age.
I continued writing through high school and college, but I didn’t consider writing books for children a possible career. I spent many years working in the banking industry before deciding I needed to try my hand at writing books that would inspire children the way I had been inspired myself. It was super scary, but I never looked back!
Today, I write books, I share them with children, and I help other authors do the same. I get to imagine, create, and inspire every day in my dream job, right from my desk in Boulder, Colorado. I get inspiration from my two kids, my high-maintenance hound dog, and the view of Rocky Mountain National Park outside my window.
