#50PreciousWords 2025 PRIZE WINNERS and Honorable Mentions

Welcome, everyone! Thank you for your patience. There were SO MANY Fabulous entries…586 total. I and my amazing judges had a very tough time choosing ONLY 65 prize winners. And honestly, we would have loved to give EVERY story an Honorable Mention. Perhaps it sounds corny…but it’s true. ALL of you who participated deserve KUDOS – you WROTE, you REVISED, you SUBMITTED…and that’s what this path to publication is all about! If your name isn’t in the prize winner’s circle or on the Honorable Mention lists, please know that there were elements of your submission that we loved…GREAT TITLES…Opening Lines that hooked us…wonderful Pacing, Lyrical Language, Heart and Humor…and often, an ending that grabbed our hearts or made us roll on the floor with laughter. But the stories that made it into the Prize Winner’s Circle had ALL of those elements – at least according to us judges.

Let me give you a peek into how we chose the prize winners and Honorable Mentions. Just like our writing journey, it’s a process. Maria Marshall and I read ALL of the stories. The other six judges read alternating sections of 20. And so, for the first round, Maria and I read 586 (and Maria kindly read hundreds of them to me because after reading 200, my blurry vision gave out)…and the other six judges each read about 100/ For every 20 stories, I asked the judges to indicate 3 favorites…possible prize winning stories. Then Maria created a Google doc with ALL of the judges favorites…a total of over 200 entries…and then each judge got to choose their favorite 65. If an entry has 8 jnitials next to it, it means that ALL the judges loved it. ..and it is going to rise to the top of the list. Stories that have 7 judge initials follow…and so on. And once we’ve determined the 65 prize winning stories, the rest on that original judge favorite list become the Honorable Mentions. So, you can see that MANY of the other entries might have gotten judge love, but not enough to make the round one list. BELIEVE ME…there are real books in those entries as well. Remember that Federico Erebia entered in 2021 and didn’t win a prize or receive an Honorable Mention, yet he took that 50 word entry and expanded it into a 50,000 word YA novel, PEDRO & DANIEL, that published in 2023 from Levine-Querido to great acclaim and accolades.

With all of those submissions, you know I needED lots of help…and I am blessed to have a team of fabulous authors who stand ready to read! They are the BEST! A huge thank you to Maria Marshall, Carmen Castillo Gilbert, Amber Bouchard, Pamela Courtney, Leah Moser, Shirin Shamsi, and Diane Tulloch.

And thank you also to everyone who bought a book at the Toadstool Bookshop in Keene and to authors who mailed books to me. This year we have a two-pronged approach to delivering beautiful new books…I partnered with CLiF, the Children’s Literacy Foundation, a nonprofit which provides grants to New Hampshire and Vermont schools in need for author visits and books! I don’t have the final tally from Toadstool and so, if you haven’t donated a book yet, there is still time to call and order one…but I know there are about 100 books in the #50PreciousWords pile…plus I have another 25 at my house that authors mailed directly to me that will be delivered to Sunset Heights Elementary School in Nashua. I’ve already delivered over 100 books – those were late arrivals from last year’s generous donors – plus brand new children’s books mailed to me by publishers. Here’s a few words from Stacey Grigas-Lewis, the library media specialist:
After you left, I had some time to look through some of these beautiful books and I couldn’t stop thinking about how fortunate we are that you reached out to CLiF and they chose our school to be the recipient of your amazingly generous donation and would be overjoyed if you wanted to continue donating!

I know everyone is anxious to scroll through the list of 65 Prize winners…and the list of 100+ Honorable Mentions…but first, a few words and a bit of housekeeping.
This year was harder THAN EVER BEFORE. There were SO MANY great stories…some already ready to be a board book…others that just need a bit of fleshing out to become a picture book or even a chapter book. Each judge can only choose 65 favorites at the end…and that list is created by listing ALL the judges favorites from their initial read. Then we send ALL the judges the list of every judges’ favorites…so each judge is getting to see entries they didn’t see on their first read of their own section.
If you don’t see your story in the prize winner’s circle or in the Honorable Mentions, that only means that the other stories got more judge love and rose up on the list…but ALL the stories got some judge love…and that’s why I know it’s important to have a diverse panel of judges.
But every submission had things that we loved…some of the titles were awesome! Others were lyrical and beautiful. Others delivered a powerful message! PLEASE KEEP WORKING ON YOUR CRAFT…AND ON THESE STORIES!!! In tomorrow’s blog post, you’ll read about a #50PreciousWords Honorable Mention from 2022 that is now a real BOOK! And I’ve done blog posts in the past for previous entries that did not win a prize OR receive an HM, but they became books anyway! So please don’t give up!!!

Here are your #50PreciousWords Honroable Mentions…a huge thank you to Maria Marshall who creates the HM lists from the judge favorites…it’s painstaking work and she devotes many many many hours/days to it!

2025 #50 Precious Words – Prize Winner’s Circle

1. STORYTIME AT THE AIRPORT by Sara Kruger

Storm rages,

Delaying flights.

Parents tap apps for updates,

Coffees cold.

Kids complain and cry,

Snacks abandoned.

Then

One passenger

Borrows books from families,

Invites children for storytime.

Parents, gate agents, vendors

Listen in.

Storm still rages,

Canceling flights.

But in one terminal

Stories soothe, and

Imagination

Takes flight.

2. MY SUITCASE by Shyamala Shanmugasundaram

I carry my blue suitcase wherever I go.

Some kids at the refugee camp ask, “What’s inside?”

I flinch and clutch my suitcase tighter.

They snatch it and look inside.

“Books? What a waste!” they laugh. “Why?”

I take back my suitcase.

“Books are my hope for a better tomorrow.”

3.  GRANDMA’S GIFTS by Francy Judge

Grandma’s gift.

Another journal for turning twelve.

Abby forced a smile. “Thanks-so-much.”

Every. Single. Birthday. Never a necklace.

Blank, crisp pages, silver-trimmed,

word-thirsty, tossed aside,

until Grandma’s burial.

No new journal,

No birthday bearhugs.

Abby found her first journal, dust-frosted,

signed in swirls,

“Love Grandma.”

And wrote:

Today I’m thirteen…

4. SEA-SHORE FRIENDS by Katie Schwartz

Sunrise…

                     …beachside…

                                               …falling tide…

Tidepool!

Fish swiiisshes.

Refreshing!

Crab cruises.

Eye-popping!

“Hi Fish!”

“Hi Crab!”

Darting…paddling…dancing…

Sea-shore friends!

Rising tide…

                       …pool disappears.

Whoooossh…Fish flutters, swept out to sea.

Scritch-scritch…Crab burrows in his hidey-hole.

Sunset…

                    …beachside…

                                               …falling tide…

Tidepool!

Fish freestyles!

Crab bobbles!

Sea-shore friends, together again!

5. PANCAKES! by Dianne Moritz

Gather the fixings.

Hippity hop.

Mix them together.

Slippity slop!

Toss in some berries.

Plippity plop!

Heat up the griddle.

Bippity bop!

Pour out the batter.

Drippity drop!

Turn pancakes over.

Flippity flop!

Stack up the pancakes.

Lickity split!

Pig out on pancakes.

Ate every bit!

6. PARIAH by Katie Arnell Moon

Waiting for the subway

Framed by dirt-stained walls

And dirtier looks

Always a pariah.

Mothers pull children closer as I pass.

The Big Apple:

rotten.

Riding the bus for miles

Greener grass ahead

Maybe different isn’t bad here.

Someone screams.

Sigh.

Honestly,

it’s like people have

never seen

rat.

7. MAKING TORTELLINI WITH NONNA by Mona Pease

Nonna dumps flour.

Pokes a hole.

Beats raw eggs with her hand!

She rolls dough thin

with the rolling pin

her mama

lugged from Italy

carrying recipes in her head.

We place filling

on dough.

Then fold,

pinch,

twist.

Pop pockets of Nonna’s lessons

in a pot of chicken broth.

8. WITNESSING MONSTERS: FOR MARY SHELLEY by KamillaM

Do you know monsters?

Mary did.

Cruel poets.

Difficult stepmothers.

Inner demons.

One stormy night

they invaded Mary’s dreams,

transforming into a creature stitched from dead men’s parts

rejected by his creator.

For nine months

Mary wrote Frankenstein,

asking

who’s responsible for evil:

Monsters?

Or us,

for giving them life?

9.  THE PAPER AIRPLANE by Janelle Mikulas

Fold.

Shape.

Pull back and let go.

He soars.

He peeks into birds’ nests.

Swoops around chimneys.

Dances with clouds.

The cool breeze cradles his sun-kissed wings.

He is free.

A sudden gust!

Tumbled.

Twisted.

Spin, spun,… splash!

A swift rescue.

Refold.

Reshape.

Pull back and let go.

He sails.

10. HE WON WITH WORDS: CHIEF STANDING BEAR OF THE PONCA by stefsenn77yahoocom

Forced from home

to Indian Territory.

Starvation…

disease…

…death.

Standing Bear gathered a group and fled.

ARRESTED?!

(He’d left without permission.)

“I am a man,” he pled.

I bleed like you.

The judge’s decision:

“An Indian is a person.”

Deserving life…liberty…happiness.

Standing Bear fought with words…and won.

11. WHEN SUN SNEEZED (BUT DIDN’T USE A TISSUE) by Sue Lancaster

Sun sneezed: ‘Aaaaachoo!’

Mercury giggled: ‘Bless you!’

Past Venus mucus flew.

Galactic goo grew and grew.

Earth gasped: ‘A mass ejection –

Soaring straight in my direction!’

Snot hit… splattered, spread.

Colors bled, overhead.

Green and pink filled the night.

People gazed: ‘The northern lights!’

12. NELLIE BLY by Jessica Evans

Believing women were meant for more.

Cooking, ironing, sweeping the floor.

Curious in nature, she took up her pen.

Began a career restricted to men.

She wrote with passion, wrote what she knew.

Went undercover, exposed what was true.

Determined, fearless, daring to ask ‘Why?’

Tenacious journalist, Ms. Nellie Bly.

13. THE ANGLERFISH by Karen Ansberry

She lived alone

     In the

Coldest

Darkest

Depths.

Her glowing lure

Was all she needed.

Until…

She wondered…

Is there more?

She swam up, up, up

And felt warmth

For the very first time.

This must be heaven! she thought

As she took her last breath

In the sun’s embrace.

14. FROM SHEEP TO SHAWL by Becky Levine

Blue sky, hot sun,

Here’s the crew.

Clip it, shear it.

Happy ewe!

Clean it, card it,

Tangle-free.

Pick a color.

Rainbow? Whee!

Pump the treadle,

Not too fast.

Turn the wheel.

Yarn at last!

Knit one, purl one,

Something new.

Wrap it, gift it.

Happy you!

15. CAMPING by Tracie Renee

In June

when the dark

feels less deep

because

fireflies blink

and crickets sing,

we sleep beneath

star blankets

to

wake warm

in sun’s glow

and

I don’t mind

(almost)

that we don’t have

a home.

16. TOGETHER AGAIN by Tracy Uhlman

Playing and laughing.

Best friend sisters.

But you had to leave.

Empty bed.

Quiet house.

We wait, hoping and praying.

Visiting is helpful.

Get well balloons tied to your bed.

Shiny like your newly bald head.

Days pass, until…

You come home, smiling.

Changed, but still ours.

Together again, gratefully.

17. EXCEPT MATEO by Susan Corry

“Lunchtime!”

Hungry tummies line up, single file.

The cafeteria clinks and clangs.

Slurps and burps erupt.

Everyone shouts and giggles.

Except Mateo.

At the allergy table.

Surrounded by empty chairs.

Far from nuts.

And friendship.

Until…

“Can I sit with you?”

Mateo’s face brightens.

Smiles spread.

Two chairs huddle, together.

18. SUNI LEE TAKES THE BEAM by Yia Lor

Suni loves tumbling.

Dad builds a backyard beam.

Together, they practice.

Flipping, flying,

even falling.

Heart set on gold,

Suni springs back up.

One day, she leaves

the backyard beam

for Tokyo and competes.

Swinging, spinning,

eventually soaring.

Dad fills with bliss.

Suni Lee, first Hmong American

20.  THE ART HERO by Melissa H. Mwai

In my nightmare,

my friends are

trapped inside paintings.

From spiky ink,

my enemy emerges.

“You can’t save them!”

At first, I’m scared

But I remember….

this is my dream.

My enemy

turns into

a paintbrush.

I paint my friends free—

dancing under rainbows

and I’m not done yet.

21. BOOMERANG! By Marty Bellis

I sent a frown into the air.

Where it went, I didn’t care.

Till it returned on Nana’s face,

Looking, feeling out of place.

“Frowns can boomerang, my friend.

Be mindful what you choose to send.”

I tried a smile instead and found

I liked having smiles circle back around!

22. A HISTORY OF NO by Brenna Jeanneret

powerful

Drums beat.

Hearts pound.

“Women go home!”

“Stay in the kitchen!”

Tomatoes thrown.

Sashes torn.

Women stumble.

Then –

a trumpet blares.

Inez Milholland,

woman warrior in white,

pushes forward.

Fearless.

Unyielding.

I cannot remember a time when I didn’t know how to read (although I know there WAS such a time). I have always lived surrounded by books. Therefore, it’s probably no surprise that I ended up wanting to create my own. This too, I started at a young age.
I continued writing through high school and college, but I didn’t consider writing books for children a possible career. I spent many years working in the banking industry before deciding I needed to try my hand at writing books that would inspire children the way I had been inspired myself. It was super scary, but I never looked back!
Today, I write books, I share them with children, and I help other authors do the same. I get to imagine, create, and inspire every day in my dream job, right from my desk in Boulder, Colorado. I get inspiration from my two kids, my high-maintenance hound dog, and the view of Rocky Mountain National Park outside my window.
