Cinema Sundays: My Picks of Great Flicks: VIVA CUBA

Most countries and communities have emergency plans in place, but the earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan and their far-reaching effects on the rest of the world are natural disasters on such a large scale that they were impossible to plan for.  Japan, and the other areas affected, will have to accept help from many different countries and organizations in order to provide what is needed for the survivors and to make the cities habitable again.

Perhaps that is the silver lining in this cloud of disaster…perhaps, as Dr. Robert Schuller used to say, this is an opportunity for heroes to step up to turn “scars into stars”…a chance for neighbor to help neighbor and people who don’t know each other to become friends.

Friendship is my theme for this coming week…and my movie pick today is “VIVA CUBA”…a past winner of the Cannes Film Festival.

In VIVA CUBA, we have a modern-day Romeo and Juliet.  Filmed in Cuba, the 2005 movie is in Spanish, with English subtitles.  It tells the story of Malu, a young girl from an upper-class family and Jorgito, a boy whose parents are poor socialists, but proud of their family’s social standing.

When her mother decides to leave Cuba, Malu and Jorgita run away, trying to reach the other side of the island where Malu’s father lives.  They hope that he will refuse to grant permission for Malu and her mother to leave Cuba, therefore enabling Malu and Jorgito to remain friends.  When the children and all the parents are finally together however, the parents use the opportunity to continue arguing and fighting, ignoring the children and their concerns.

The film won 34 national and international awards and explores the question of emigration and the effects on children who have to leave friends and extended family behind.   I don’t think this is a “family” movie…but it is definitely a movie for parents.  In my opinion, this was the ultimate movie about friendship…but I think it is also a film with a wake-up call to parents who are separated, divorced or just not getting along.  When children are involved, we need to make them aware of what is going on (they already know much more than you think) and give them the opportunity to voice their questions and concerns.

We need to encourage our children are to offer their opinions and voice their questions and concerns without the fear of being judged or yelled at.  This builds their self-esteem and enables them to feel comfortable coming to us with their problems.  For 99 other gentle parenting tips like this one, please check out my new book, now on sale for HALF-PRICE on my website.  When you purchase a copy of the book, you are automatically entered in the drawing for a CRAFTY EASTER BASKET filled with craft supplies for your preschooler.  If you’d like to enter to win with purchasing, just fill out the contact form on my website.

Cinema Sundays: My Picks of Great Flicks…Valentine’s Day Special

Early 20th century Valentine's Day card, showi...

My husband and I love watching movies.

We rarely go to the theater.

Instead, we frequent the shelves of our local library which offer brand-new-to-DVD movies, as well as many treasured classics and a great collection of foreign films…all for free!   Our local stores also have red boxes (and black boxes and perhaps other color boxes as well) which are vending machines that disperse a wide range of movie DVD’s for the cost of $1.00 per night.

Looking back, I remember going to the movies on a Saturday with my older sister or several friends.  Fifty cents was the admission price…and you got to see a double feature, newsreel and several cartoons…at the end of the showing, you were allowed to remain in the theater and see it all again!  Clutching a precious quarter in my hand, I would approach the concession counter and make my selections…weighing the cost of bonbons (chocolate covered vanilla ice cream balls…five or six to a narrow rectangular package) against the box of spearmint leaves and jumbo popcorn which together cost the same as the bonbons.   Once in a while, the bonbons won out…I really loved them!

With Valentine’s Day so close, I’d like to recommend a movie (actually two…one is the sequel) that will warm you heart and remind you that there are many types of love and many ways to show it.

It may surprise you that both are “Christmas” movies…but perhaps that is not so surprising…under all the commercialism of the Christmas season these days…the message is still about abiding love.

The Christmas Shoes, and its sequel, The Christmas Blessing, are both movies on my not-to-be-missed list.  With top performing actors, both will make you smile and cry with joy…and both will remind you of what is really important in life.

Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!  Stop by tomorrow for Make-A-Meal Mondays…and something special for Valentine’s Day.

Quotable Timeless Tuesday: SISTERS

Birth order can affect human psychology, thoug...

When I got home the other day, there was a package waiting for me at the door.  Actually, there were THREE packages!  All from the same person!

My birthday is next week 🙂 and my dear wonderful sister had sent me some presents!

A sister is a little bit of childhood that can never be lost.

Isn’t it fun to get stuff in the mail?  I know they say it is better to give than to receive.  That is definitely true…but I must admit that it is lovely to open a present from someone who loves you, especially a sister who seems to know just what you need, want and like.  Maybe that’s because you grow up together and even though you may not be close when you are young, you still have the same history…or almost the same.  Although parents may try to treat each child in the family the same, it is really impossible.  There are many factors that determine how parents interact with their children…birth order, temperament and personality of each child and where the parents are in their own life journey.

Sister is probably the most competitive relationship within the family, but once sisters are grown, it becomes the strongest relationship.

Margaret Mead

Are you close with your siblings?  My sister and I were not when we were growing up, but now that we are older, the relationship seems more important and the bond grows stronger.

The first package contained a beautiful nightgown, a package of bath tea, a yummy bar of dark chocolate laced with cranberries and an enchanting handmade card.  The second package was heavy…a bunch of romance novels…one of my favorite escapes.  The third package was the heaviest of all…more books…one of which was a large treasury of women’s quotations!

For there is no friend like a sister

In calm or stormy weather;

To cheer one on the tedious way,

To fetch one if one goes astray,

To lift one if one totters down,

To strengthen whilst one stands.

Christina Rossetti

How did my sister know that I had decided to reserve my Tuesday blog post for favorite quotes?  I hadn’t mentioned it to her.

Maybe it’s that special bond between sisters?

So I think it is appropriate to dedicate this first Quotable Timeless Tuesday post to sisters…my sister, in particular.

A sister is both your mirror…and your opposite
