Happy Book Birthday: THE PIE THAT MOLLY GREW Plus Giveaway

It’s time to sing Happy Birthday to a brand-new book again! Hurray for THE PIE THAT MOLLY GREW, illustrated by Chamisa Kellogg and launching TODAY from Sleeping Bear Press!!! I connected with the author, Sue Heavenrich, many years ago when I jumped into the kidlit community – like me, she was participating in Susanna Leonard Hill’s Perfect Picture Book Friday posts, and like me, she was hoping to be a published author one day. And now she has a fabulous list of STEM and STEAM books!

THE PIE THAT MOLLY GREW

Written by Sue Heavenrich

Illustrated by Chamisa Kellogg

Published by Sleeping Bear Press (August 8, 2023)

Ages: 4-8

Themes: Gardening, Baking, Gratitude

Synopsis: From Amazon:
Using “The House That Jack Built” rhyme scheme and beginning with the planting of a single seed, the journey of bringing a pumpkin to harvest comes to life for young readers. Under Molly’s watchful eye and care, each stage of growth–from the seed to the sprout to the leaves to the final fruit on the vine–is showcased. And at the end, Molly’s lovely pumpkin is turned into a delicious pie for one and all to share in a celebration of gratitude. All from the seed that Molly sowed. Back matter includes fun facts about pumpkins, the important pollinators who help them grow, as well as a pumpkin pie recipe.

I love that Sue used the structure of The House That Jack Built…which is a huge challenge because when you rhyme, you need to make sure that you don’t compromise the story in order to ‘make it rhyme’…and Sue definitely has the rhyming gift – this is such a fun read-aloud!!!! Plus it’s a wonderful STEM/STEAM story – and the back matter has even more information!

This beautiful book can be purchased at your favorite indie bookstore or Amazon or Bookshop.org. And reviewing it on Amazon and Goodreads is such an important step to help books like this one get discovered by other readers. And even if you haven’t had a chance to read the book, you can mark it as WANT TO READ on Goodreads.

Sue is graciously offering a giveaway of a copy of THE PIE THAT MOLLY GREW! Please make sure you leave a comment (maybe you can tell us your FAVORITE type of pie – mine is apple…warm with a scoop of vanilla on top – but I definitely wouldn’t say no to a slice of chocolate cream pie)…and please share this post widely on your social media. There is a blog tour going on for this book…here are the other stops:

  1. Congratulations on one more book! I love pie, but if I had to pick one, it would be my mother’s chocolate cream pie. She passed away, but memories of it never will 🙂

  2. This looks to be a delightful book that would be enjoyed by my second grade class. I would love an opportunity to win this in the giveaway. And congratulations on all your mini published books! By the way, I do enjoy a slice of pumpkin pie, as well as a hot apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

  3. What a fun and informative read aloud! I used to grow pumpkins with my parents and sell them at our greenhouse. It brings back fond memories. My favorite pie is cherry with a hint of almond.

  4. Gratitude, STEM, and pie – sounds like my kind of book. Congratulations, Sue! My favourite pie is apple, but the graham cracker crust of a lemon meringue is pretty sweet too.

  6. How fun and creative of you, Sue. Love This is the House that Jack Built and I bet I’ll really love to read The Pie That Molly Grew to kids at our little school. I can already hear them growing the pie from memory after they’ve heard it a few times. You have a great blog tour going. I love pie. Fresh raspberry could be my favorite! Pumpkin’s good too…covered with whipped cream!

    • Don’t worry about it, Sue. The blog can be wonky. And you responded to quite a few of them.
By the way, my niece moved to Ithaca a year or so ago…and she came to visit my in New Hampshire recently and brought me an article from a local paper…all about YOU. She didn’t realize I knew you…she just saw it was an article about picture books and thought I’d be interested. And she was amazed when I showed her this post.

  7. I love sour cherry pie, but really I can’t think of a single type of pie I would turn down. This sounds like such a fun book and I love the idea for the rhyme scheme. Sharing to my social media 😀

  8. Congratulations on a new book! This sounds yummy to read and love the science aspect. My favorite pie is my homemade pumpkin pie (I only use fresh pumpkin, not canned) with graham cracker crust.
