Perfect Picture Book Friday: MY SISTER DAISY

Happy Perfect Picture Book Friday, dear friends. And today is also Multicultural Children’s Book Day. In celebration, I’m turning the spotlight on a fabulous new book, MY SISTER, DAISY,

MY SISTER, DAISY

Written by Aria Karlsson

Illustrated by Linus Curci

Published by Capstone Press(2021)

Ages: 5-8

Themes: Gender identity, sibling relationships

Synopsis: From Amazon:
Daisy’s older brother is thrilled when he gets a new sibling. They are best buddies who do everything together. But in kindergarten, things change. His sibling tells him she is a girl and wants to be called Daisy. Daisy’s brother must adjust to the change―including what it means for him and their relationship. A powerful, moving picture book based on a true story, My Sister, Daisy handles a sensitive subject with warmth and love.

WHY I LOVE THIS BOOK:
1. I love stories that serve as mirrors and windows…validating a child’s feelings while allowing others to experience situations different from their own.
2. The simple text from the child’s perspective helps connect the reader to the situation.
3. Beautiful illustrations engage young children.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2022 (1/28/22) is in its 9th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.

MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves. Read about our Mission & History HERE.

  1. This is a gorgeous book. I appreciate Adria Karlsson for not writing from the perspective of a Trans child coming out and more from the perspective of someone who only wants to ask questions because they don’t understand the Trans identity. Karlsson/family even asked for help to understand this identity. This book needs to be in every library. Thank you so much for spotlighting it, Vivian!

  2. Whoa! What a powerful book! Then I pause and wonder if it will become a victim of the book bans – teeth gnashing…..Vivian thanks for highlighting children’s book. Happy 2022!
