Happy Book Birthday: PLIGHT OF THE PELICAN: How Science Saved a Species

YES! YES! YES! It’s time to sing Happy Birthday to another beautiful new book! And this book has a VERY SPECIAL back story…this book was an Honorable Mention in the 2022 #50PreciousWords Contest. If you check yesterday’s blog post where we announced the prize winners and Honorable Mentions, who knows how many books-in-the-making you will find!

Author Jessica Stremer is such a fabulous writer…and her books are incredible. And what a wonderful partnership the editor created when they signed on Gordy Wright to do the illustrations!! The cover invites and intrigues…and the reader can’t wait to open the book to see more!

And we are so lucky…Jessica stopped by to chat…and to share her story behind the story of how her #50PreciousWords entry became a REAL BOOK!!!

ME: WELCOME, Jessica. thank you for stopping by.

JESSICA: Thank you so much for having me, Vivian. I’m excited to share how PLIGHT OF THE PELICAN came to be a book.

Pelicans are one of my favorite birds. I tried writing a story about them years ago, but it just wasn’t working, primarily I think because it was missing the “so what” factor.

In early 2022, my family and I took a trip up the coast of California when I began brainstorming ideas for the 50 Precious Words competition. Pelicans once again popped into my head. My books GREAT CARRIER REEF and LIGHTS OUT both have a hopeful environmental theme and I wondered if I could find a way to incorporate that approach into my entry.  Here’s what I came up with:

Skimming

Climbing

Spotting

Diving

Splashing

Scooping

Gulping

Toxins leaching

Silently building . . .

Courting

Nesting

Shells thinning

Eggs crushing

Numbers dwindling

Pelicans needing

            HELP

Researchers observing

That entry received honorable mention and had a lot of my critique partners excited, so I decided to flush it out into a full picture book manuscript, sticking to the sparse language while working in some layered text for additional context.

My editor loved the concept, but wanted the layered text incorporated into the main body of the manuscript. She also had the brilliant suggestion to add a few spreads about animals that are currently at risk to show that there is more work to be done. Each revision was a lot of work and I’m really proud of how this book turned out.

I was also excited when my editor said that Gordy Wright, who also illustrated my debut picture book GREAT CARRIER REEF, signed on to also illustrate this book. His work elevates the story to a whole new level.

I’m grateful to Vivian for continuing the 50 Precious Words competition. Without her PLIGHT OF THE PELICAN wouldn’t exist.

Jessica Stremer is a children’s book writer with a background in biology and ecology. Her passion lies in inspiring curiosity, wonder, and respect for our natural world. Jessica’s debut picture book, Great Carrier Reef, also illustrated by Gordy Wright, was a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection and received two starred reviews. She lives in Wisconsin with her family.

Gordy Wright is an illustrator and printmaker who paints by hand in gouache and acrylic. Recent projects include Wild In the Streets by Marilyn Singer, and Strange But True by Kathryn Hulic, as well as Great Carrier Reef, by Jessica Stremer, which received two starred reviews. Gordy graduated with a first class degree in illustration from the University of the West of England, and lives in Bristol.

Happy Book Birthday: THE MUD ANGELS: How Students Saved the City of Florence

A couple of years ago, author Karen Greenwald showed me the manuscript for THE MUD ANGELS: How Students Saved the City of Florence. I read it and I told her: THIS IS A BOOK!

And now it is!!! HAPPY BOOK BIRTHDAY TO THE MUD ANGELS!!!

The cover is everything we could hope – wonderful color palette…and beautiful art! And I love how the title is sitting in the muck and mud! Olga Lee did a fabulous job!

Here’s a little bit about the book from the Amazon sales page:
Based on real events, this story shows how a team of international volunteers worked together to save priceless artifacts after a flood.

When the Arno River floods the city of Florence, Italy in 1966, it leaves slimy, smelly mud everywhere. A young girl watches students from around the world, many from the US, help save the town’s rare treasures, earning themselves the nickname Gli Angeli del Fango, the Mud Angels.

According to the publisher, the book targets ages 4-8 – but honestly, this is a picture book that also belongs in the upper elementary and middle school classroom! What a fabulous story to encourage young readers to become activists – to get involved with what’s going on around them, in their school and in their community and beyond.

ME: Welcome, dear Karen…thank you for coming to chat with us!

KAREN: Hi Vivian, it’s lovely to be here. Thank you so much for joining the celebration for THE MUD ANGELS.
When you first begin learning how to write picture books, you start hearing about all the rules. This can feel overwhelming at times. However, there is one that I find myself returning to again and again—the idea that you should write what you feel personally connected to or have experience with. This is advice not to ignore! The Mud Angels touches on many facets of my life, from the environmental aspects to my obvious and enormous love of libraries, from the fact that it was the first-time books were treated as art, to my interest in studying various cultures…and, ultimately, the community of global youth that joined harmoniously to do something important for the world. I have loved researching, interviewing, and learning about this dark (and yet, hopeful) period in history. Along the way, the process has yielded me new friendships, education, and food for thought. It even inspired me to take Italian!

I hope others in kid lit find stories to write that nurture their souls as much as this one does mine!

That’s fabulous advice, Karen. Because when we feel connected with the story we are researching, the writing shows that – and the reader connects, too.

In 16th-century Portugal, even Doña Gracia’s Jewish name was a secret. But she and her merchant husband helped other secret Jews, by persuading the king to protect them during the Inquisition. When her husband died, many said no woman would be able to run their international business, but Doña Gracia did. Escaping Portugal, she helped other Jews do the same, smuggling them out of the country on her spice ships in the night. Only in Turkey was she finally able to live freely as a Jew, and to use her resources to build synagogues, hospitals, and schools. Doña Gracia saved worlds.

Why I Love This Book:
1. I love learning about people who made a difference – activists who most of us have probably never heard of – and who children need to learn about to be inspired to be activists, too. If Dona Gracia were alive today, I’m sure her name would be in the news as someone fighting for the right for Jews and all people to be able to practice their religions and customs without fearing for their lives.
2. I love the beautifully well-written text that addresses very difficult topics in an honest, yet gentle way.
3. I love the glorious illustrations…the artist captured the time period perfectly…and put us right in the moment with the characters.

Mini-interview with author Bonni Goldberg:
ME: Hello Bonni! Thank you for stopping by. We all love hearing about the story behind the story. Can you share how the idea to write this book came about?

BONNI: Thank you for having me, Vivian. I’m excited to share this story with the world.
The inspiration for writing this book was my own introduction to Gracia during a mother-daughter Bat Mitzvah program I was attending with my daughter, Isabel. Even though a number of the other mothers were very learned about Judaism and Jewish history, none of them had heard of Gracia either. But I did know three things. Jewish educators were always looking for strong Jewish women to include in their curriculum. There isn’t nearly enough representation of Sephardic Jews in most of the history American Jewish children learn. I couldn’t stand by and do nothing while Gracia was being left out of our story. And even beyond the Jewish community, Gracia was one of the most powerful women alive during the Renaissance. She broke norms for the women of her time and took on kings and courts to protect others.

SEPHARDIC PINK RICE

Rice is a staple in the Middle East, and this recipe is especially favored by the the Greek Jews of Rhodes.

1 cup long grained white rice, washed
1 onion, chopped
1 tablespoon oil
2 cups water
1 tablespoon ketchup
2 teaspoons salt

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. In a medium pot with a tight fitting lid, heat oil, rice and onion over medium high heat. Stir to coat rice with oil and cook about 5 minutes, stirring often until rice and onion are translucent. 
2. Add water, ketchup and salt. Stir once, lower heat and cover. Cook without peeking for 20 minutes. Uncover, fluff rice with a fork and let sit 5 minutes with the lid on slightly ajar to allow steam to escape.
~makes 3 cups cooked rice
